To do this, you will bring and maintain, or develop, genuine expertise in the area of government/ public sector for which you are responsible.

You will have responsibilities across all phases of our client development work, from initial business development, through proposal preparation and delivery to maintaining great relationships with clients during projects and beyond.

You will establish and maintain relationships with key individuals in client organisations, education them on our capabilities, gather intelligence about up coming opportunities and help shape procurements as they are being formed. You will advise the PSP leadership team on whether and how to pursue opportunities and make recommendations for generating new opportunities. You will work with CSTs to construct plans for developing relationships with potential and existing clients and to manage the client opportunity pipeline and you will support them in the development of written materials for client development discussions.

When contracts are awarded, you will work with the PSP leadership team and contracting specialists to negotiate contract terms. After every procurement, you will conduct debrief sessions with internal and client personnel, to identify lessons learned.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Our work is about coaching others to achieve success in implementing new approaches and delivering lasting outcomes.  You’ll have the opportunity to manage projects and progress with minimal supervision, including tracking metrics, handling complex analyses, and preparing communications to report back to client and internal leadership.  Additionally, you’ll develop practical recommendations and contribute to team discussions on implications of analysis; identifying implementation challenges.

You’ll work alongside the client’s staff on each project, assisting with implementation tasks.  This could include facilitating working sessions with front-line and supervisors, connecting with and motivating the client team, or developing skills of McKinsey or client team members when appropriate, principally through coaching.  You’ll also solicit feedback from team members to develop your own skills.  Common traits of those successful in this role are leadership, integrity, a sharp analytical mind, creativity, and the ability to work with people across all levels in an organization.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

You’ll work in teams of typically 3 – 5 consultants, playing an active role in all aspects of the client engagement.

This includes gathering and analyzing information, formulating and testing hypotheses, and developing and communicating recommendations.  You’ll also have the opportunity to present results to client management and implement recommendations in collaboration with client team members.

You’ll gain new skills and build on the strengths you bring to the firm.  Business Analysts receive exceptional training as well as frequent coaching and mentoring from colleagues on their teams.  This support includes a Partner from your local office or practice assigned to you to help guide your career as well as several weeks of formal training in your first two years as a Business Analyst.  Additionally, you’ll receive guidance and support from your local office in the selection of client projects, helping you to develop your skills and build your network.

We view the Business Analyst position as the start of a rewarding, challenging, and highly flexible career with McKinsey.  During your first few years with the firm, you will serve as a BA on multiple client engagements and work with a number of colleagues and clients in a range of industry and functional areas.  We encourage you to explore different content areas or geographies through a year-long rotation with one of our practices (e.g., corporate finance, social sector, healthcare, operations) or global offices; many do this after two years as a generalist BA.  For all BA’s, you will likely intersect with many elements of our firm’s work including Digital McKinsey, Implementation, and New Ventures – either by collaborating on teams or working with colleagues from these groups.

Following your BA tenure, assuming good performance, you will move into a post-graduate school role.  Some BAs will take advantage of the opportunity to get outside experience through a secondment (externship) with a private sector or social sector client with the firm’s support.  Others may choose to pursue graduate school with support from the firm.

While all consultants develop specialized knowledge and a focused program as they progress with McKinsey, most are initially very broad in their focus, meaning they do not need specific industry or functional expertise to be successful. For consultants who join McKinsey as experienced professionals, this can mean building on previous knowledge or developing unique experience in an area that is completely new.
