Portfolio Operations Overview

The Portfolio Operations Department forms part of the London Portfolio Services Division. Portfolio Operations is made up of Asset Servicing, Counterparty Oversight, Trade Operations; Derivative Operations; Reconciliations and Regulatory Reporting.

Asset Servicing Overview

The Asset Servicing department within Portfolio Operations is responsible for the research and creation of Corporate Action events, ensuring the capture of authorised fund manager decisions, execution of instructions to custodians and processing of stock and cash movements. The team is also responsible for communicating updates to our accounting book of record. It covers all markets and a range of asset classes including but not limited to equities, bonds and CFD’s. Asset Servicing is also responsible for the creation and monitoring of global income events. The team interacts with an array of departments across Schroders, building key links with our Investment, Compliance, Tax and Accounting colleagues.

This is a fast paced environment with an emphasis on meeting tight deadlines.

Role Overview

  • The role includes identification and creation of corporate events on our internal systems. You will ensure authorised decisions are received from investment and be responsible for the generation and execution of Corporate Action instructions to custodians and other third party contacts. Additionally you will be responsible for the timely and accurate update of Corporate Action movements.
  • As a technical specialist you will not only be responsible for the end to end lifecycle of Corporate Actions, but also accountable for the checking of events, releasing of instructions and stock and cash entries created by junior team members.
  • The role includes the validation and approval of income events.
  • The successful candidate will possess expertise within this function and be able to demonstrate the key skills required to perform the role to the high standard required in order to enable the team to deliver its objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identification and scrubbing of new event sources from multiple custodians and data vendor.
  • Creation of the Corporate Action composite record within our system including aligning options across multiple custodians.
  • Checking and approval of composite records created by other team members.
  • Ensure event details are available to investment within agreed timescale.
  • Manage authorised Fund Manager decisions on elective events
  • To reconcile holdings between Custodians and SIM Systems, resolving or escalating any differences
  • Prepare instructions for authorising and subsequent despatch to Custodians in an accurate and timely manner
  • Checking and releasing of instructions created by other team members
  • Ensure instructions have been successfully sent and any non-default instructions are confirmed as received
  • Booking of stock and cash entries where required.
  • Ensuring timely update of accounting entries including book cost calculations following corporate events
  • Management of compliance warnings on securities during the lifecycle of corporate events.
  • Manage and meet all deadlines by keeping up to date with the progress of events
  • All processes are checked and authorised in accordance with procedures and controls.
  • Meet all deadlines and ensure procedures and controls are fully implemented
  • Ensure full documentation is kept in files in accordance with procedures and timely closure of events
  • Escalate potential problems before they become a risk
  • Validation and approval of income events
  • Meet the needs of our business partners and internal clients.
  • To approve and update procedure manuals, service definitions and audit reports. Conduct root cause analysis on issues that arise.
  • Investigation into and resolution of stock and cash breaks arising from event bookings
  • Provide cover where required
  • Ensuring key criteria for all transition activity has been identified and actioned
  • Responsible for identifying Corporate Actions that will potentially affect inbound and outbound transitions.
  • Training of staff
  • Provide specialist product knowledge; contribute to department initiatives and projects
  • Provide regular feedback to the Team leader on individuals performance
  • Experience and Skills:
  • Proven experience within a global Corporate Actions team
  • Experience with Equities, Bonds and CFD’s
  • Full understanding of the end to end Corporate Action processes for Mandatory and Voluntary events and the impacts on business partners and clients.
  • Numerical skills and the ability to monitor and produce high quality MIS, and naturally perform root cause analysis.
  • Awareness of the risks associated with Corporate Actions with a proactive approach to preventative measures.
  • Capability to develop and manage strong working relationships with global internal departments and external counterparties.
  • Exceptional time management and ability to remain calm in a pressurised environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Adaptable to changing needs and environment
  • Desirable but not essential
  • Experience of SWIFT messaging
  • Working knowledge of Aladdin
  • Advanced excel skills
