WHSmith PLC  is a British retailer, headquartered in Swindon, Wiltshire, which operates a chain of high street, railway station, airport, port, hospital and motorway service station shops selling books, stationery, magazines, newspapers, entertainment products and confectionary. The company was formed by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna in 1792 as a news vendor in London. It remained under the ownership of the Smith family for many years and saw large-scale expansion during the 1970s as the company began to diversify into other markets.

Following a rejected private equity takeover in 2004, the company began to focus on its core retail business. It was the first retail chain in the world, and was responsible for the creation of the ISBN book identifier. WHSmith is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. It celebrated its 225th anniversary in 2017.

Or how about joining a super-cool brand like Funky Pigeon? Whatever role or area interests you, there’s an exciting future ahead. That’s because we give our people the freedom to excel.

‘No Limits’ is our motto. Work hard – and anything’s possible.

Head Office – London

Retail Head Office jobs as fast-paced as these are hard to come by.

As a complex and growing organisation, one Head Office just wouldn’t fit our needs. So we have three. Our High Street business is run from Swindon, our Australian operation from Sydney and our Travel business from the centre of London.

Our Travel units operate from over 750 sites in airports, railway stations, motorway services, bus stations, hospitals, cafés and workplaces. Over 180 of these are in international locations including Australia, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Europe, and a small number of kiosks in China and India.

Our London Office is ideally situated in Holborn, only a five minute walk from Holborn tube station and close to a plethora of shops, bars and restaurants. With only around 120 people based here, we are a close-knit team that likes to work hard and play hard. But we never lose focus of our common goal – being the leading retailer in convenience, books and news for the world’s travelling customer. We want each person to be happy in their job, after all one of our core principles is to ‘Value our People’. We know how important work-life balance is to our colleagues, so we do our best to offer some equilibrium through a range of flexible working arrangements, including the option to buy extra holiday through our fantastic Holiday Trading Scheme.

To keep abreast of what our people want, we run a regular employee engagement survey. Our more recent results led to us introducing some new initiatives, including getting your birthday off work as a day’s holiday and an early finish on a Friday to help make the most of the weekend. We communicate regularly through a mix of the weekly newsletter, monthly huddles, an annual away day and ‘The Forum’; where representatives from each business area meet with Directors – all of which help keep our people up-to-date and engaged with what is going on across the business.

Year round we have many events that are open to everyone, including Learning at Work Week and Wellbeing at Work Week. Not to mention the many after-work activities organised by our social committee, such as quizzes and the annual ‘Picnic in the Park’; allowing people to make the most of what the capital has to offer!

As our Travel business continues to grow, both in the UK and internationally, there has never been a more exciting time to join the team.

Head Office – Swindon

From IT to Marketing, Buying to Finance, the WHSmith Swindon Head Office offers it all.

A company as large and growing as fast as ours needs an intricate infrastructure to support it. That’s why we have three Head Offices. One in London to support our Travel stores, one in Sydney to look after our Australian operation and our High Street team based at our Swindon Head Office.

Stationery, books, newspapers, confectionery, drinks – the average WHSmith High Street store sells all of this and more. We have over 600 High Street stores in most major UK towns and cities. That comes to 2.89 million square feet of selling space!

From Swindon the teams work on the end-to-end retail process, sourcing products through to creating plans for store layouts and product displays. With over 500 people here, it never stands still, yet we’re all focused on a common goal; to be Britain’s most popular high street stationer, bookseller and newsagent.

We want each person to be happy in their job, after all one of our core principles is to ‘Value our People’. So we strive to provide work-life balance through flexible working arrangements, including the choice to buy extra holiday through our fantastic Holiday Trading Scheme. We also offer free parking, an on-site canteen with Starbucks and preferential rates for our employees at our on-site nursery – Bright Horizons.

To ensure we know what our people want, we run a regular employee engagement survey. Recent feedback has led to initiatives such as a day’s holiday on your birthday and finishing early on Fridays. We have a weekly newsletter, quarterly briefings and ‘The Forum’; where representatives from each business area meet with Directors – all of which ensure we keep our people up-to-date and engaged with what is going on across the business. While each function has its own away days, there are plenty of events for all departments to come together: a Learning at Work Week; a Wellbeing at Work Week; and social activities such as summer barbeques.

Swindon lies in the beautiful county of Wiltshire. Many of our people commute from Bristol and Bath, passing through rolling green countryside to reach us. Find out more about Wiltshire and Swindon here:
