Yell Careers meets Whizz-Kidz

Yell Careers have been working with Whizz-Kidz, a UK charity providing mobility equipment for disabled young people, for two years. Here, Syreeta Harewood from our Talent Acquisition Team shares an update on how our relationship with the charity has grown and how our Whizz-Kidz work skills days are progressing.

Yell Careers recently visited Treloar College, a school which provides education, care, therapy, medical support and independence training to young people with physical disabilities from all over the UK, and overseas. Their main aim is to prepare these young people for adult life, giving them the confidence and skills to achieve their full potential.

Yell’s journey with Treloar College started approximately two years ago when I heard about the charity Whizz-Kidz at a conference and I felt that we could offer support.

Whizz-Kidz is a charity which provides disabled children and young people with mobility equipment, support and life skills. After contacting Whizz-Kidz to see what we could do to help, we put together a plan for annual work skills days for those young people approaching working age. Run by Yell’s Resourcing team, our days include interview techniques, CV writing, workshops on how to apply for jobs and guest speakers, who introduced the group to the ways in which businesses work.

Our first work skills day was such a success that Treloar College invited us to meet with their students, and share our tips on entering the working world with them. How could we say no?

So, on a rather warm July afternoon Katie Schulten, our resident apprentice, and I made the journey to Alton where we met with nine young adults, their carers and Treloar’s Progress and Transition Co-ordinator, Sarah Stewart-Knibbs.

We started the day with an ice breaking quiz to find out about each person, spoke about the different routes to take after college, gave interview technique training and took them through an introduction to LinkedIn.

“Our students are unique at Treloar, we are a specialised college for students with complex physical disabilities and the vast majority of our students are full-time wheelchair users and they all recognise the difficulties they face when looking for training or work when they leave Treloar College,” said Trealor’s Sarah Stewart-Knibbs.

Discussing the work skills day, Sarah said:

“We have invited numerous companies to come and deliver ‘realistic’ employment advice to our students and Yell did just that! They recognised the difficulties that our students face and delivered sessions that were engaging, focused and appropriate.

Our students loved it, it was one of the first times that they felt that someone was being ‘real’. Yell have been magnificent and we can’t thank them enough for giving up their valuable time to come and support our students with employability advice.”

Yell Careers will continue to support Whizz-Kidz and Treloar’s College and cannot wait for our upcoming mock interview and CV workshop day.

Whizz-Kidz is working hard to transform the lives of disabled children across the UK, supporting them to become confident and independent young adults. For more information visit
